Laser osteotomy provides a contactless tool that can produce incisions with arbitrary geometry on human bone tissue. In order to protect the critical structures under the bone tissue, it is required to stop the laser bone ablation immediately while the bone is cut through.
In the project OCT-LABS, an optical coherence tomography is applied to detect the interface between the bone and the underlying soft tissue structures automatically. After 3D reconstruction and segmentation of the ablation site, the laser pulse distribution and laser parameters are online reorganized while approaching the interface to ensure minimal injury to the critical structures.
